Vic: Stargazers turn out to see Mars

Thousands of Melbourne stargazers turned their eyes towards the heavens last nightas the planet Mars and Earth approached their closest pass in more than 60,000 years.

Parks Victoria says about 10,000 people turned up to catch a glimpse of the red planet.

And Parks Victoria says staff were forced to turn away people from Braeside Park whenthe Astronomical Society of Victoria held its first official viewing session.

Mars and Earth will be at their closest point on Wednesday.

The society is holding another viewing session at Braeside Park in Lower DandenongRoad at 8 pm (AEST) tonight, and at various Melbourne locations throughout the week.
