Fed: Expert team to review nursing education

The federal government says a national review of nursing education, the first in seven
years, will be carried out this year.

Education Minister DAVID KEMP and Health Minister MICHAEL WOOLDRIDGE say the review
team will be led by experienced health administrator PATRICIA HEATH.

It's expected to make recommendations on models of nursing education and training to
meet emerging labour force needs, including practical training and re-entry to the workforce.

Dr KEMP says the previous review of nursing education was conducted in 1994, a year
after the transfer of nurse training from hospitals to universities was finalised.

He says Mrs HEATH has had an outstanding career in the health industry and brings to
the task the experience of leadership in higher education.

Other tasks facing the team include examining the skills and knowledge required to
meet the changing needs of nurses and mechanisms for attracting new recruits.

The team is expected to report early next year.
