QLD: Biker killed in police chase

A member of the Odins Warriors motorcycle gang has been killed in a high speed police
chase on the M1 motorway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

And a female passenger, critically injured in the crash has been rushed to the Gold
Coast hospital.

Police say the motorcycle rider had broken the speed limit and was being pursued by
a marked police car.

Acting inspector DAVE MCAULLY says police called off the pursuit because of high speed
before the motorcycle left the highway and crashed into a railing at Helensvale, killing
the rider instantly, about 7.45pm (AEST).

The Traffic Accident Investigation squad and members of the Ethical Standards Commission
have begun an inquiry.

Police believe the couple may have attended a motorcycle gang memorial earlier in the day.

Acting Inspector MCAULLY says the marked police car had been following several motorcycles
when one of the group sped away and the police car followed it.

Acting Inspector MCAULLY says details concerning the speeds reached in the chase haven't
been released but the instruction to end the chase was received before the crash occurred.
